History
64 State Circle is a historically significant one-story vernacular frame building constructed between 1844 and 1854. Originally part of a large tract once owned by Governor Charles Calvert in the early 18th century, the building first served as a physician’s office for Dr. Abram Claude and later as a dental office for his son, Dr. Gordon Handy Claude, who also served as mayor of Annapolis.
Following a fire around 1913, Dr. Claude rebuilt the structure, adding a rear ell and incorporating salvaged materials from the demolished octagonal annex of the Maryland State House. Throughout the 20th century, the building evolved into a commercial property, hosting various small businesses including gift shops, civic offices, and boutiques — most recently, Welcome Home.
Renovations in the 1970s and 1980s added a basement apartment and rear addition, preserving the structure’s charm while enhancing its usability. Today, 64 State Circle stands as a beautifully maintained retail space in the heart of Annapolis’s historic district.
